Slow news day #Publishing#taint week#traffic#viral December 28 2012 | Ariel offbeatbride This is the real-time leaderboard showing the most read posts across the Empire, with the number showing how many people are reading the post simultaneously. Wow, what are the chances that Offbeat Home and Offbeat Bride both get linked by heavy-traffic sites within 15 minutes of each other? First ThinkGeek linked Caroline's post about jellyfish pendant lamps, and then a couple minutes later a mean-spirited Jezebel post went up about Amber & Matt's irreverent and elegantly gothy wedding. (And no, I'm not linking to the post because it's so stupid that even the commenters over there are like "What? This is a stupid post." Don't give them your eye-balls. Instead, go read about hate-reads and how for-profit websites work.) Clearly, it's a suuuuuper slow newsday here in the editorial taint between Christmas and New Years. It's amusing that in that quiet no-mans land when bloggers and social media managers are desperate for something (ANYTHING!) eye-catching/weird to post… they find their way to the Empire. Where it's always a slow news day! (This reminds me that I have a post to write one of these days about my editorial conundrums about what to post when "real news" happens that relates even slightly to one of my sites. We didn't do posts on Offbeat Bride about Washington State's marriage equality law even though I'm personally super excited about it, and we only did a post about the Newtown, CT shootings on Offbeat Families because readers emailed us begging us to write SOMETHING. I have things to say about this issue. I'll write that after the new year, promise.) Reporter Name * Reporter Email * Original text Enter the original text here. Taint. 14 agree Bah. Jezebel, we have such a history, but I dislike her on the regular. 3 agree Slow news day? I'LL TAKE IT. So I read this post yesterday. Then today my hubsters~to~be burst in the bathroom while I was taking a shower and exclaimed "Guess what was linked on one of my favorite gaming blogs, babe?!" And of course I knew: Offbeat Home. 🙂 A geeky happy moment. 3 agree Thank you for not linking to the Jezebel post. That was a disturbing thing to wake up and find yesterday (and we're on our honeymoon right now!). I want thank you for running the kind of site you do – positive, inclusive, enthusiastic, friendly, offbeat and UPbeat. I appreciate you even more now. 🙂 14 agree Sadly, this kind of thing has happened so frequently that I actually have a post about it: How to deal when your wedding goes viral and people hate it. This is all to say, you're in very good company. 🙂 I actually found and read that post earlier this morning, and it was very helpful (and made me feel less alone!). Thanks Ariel! Yeah, my proposal went viral, with help from OBB, and I got some seriously nasty hate mail and comments. Yick! Very excited to read your post about why y'all don't talk about news, as that's something I find myself missing/wanting in the indie bride blogosphere! 1 agrees Look for that post on Wednesday! 1 agrees Since two years have past, is there any way you can link the article or give any suggestions on how to find it? I'd be very interested in reading it. Thanks so much! Oh yeah! Of course. Here it is: http://offbeatempire.com/2013/01/current-events I'd just like to add that I love reading your thoughts on the tiny little details (well, I suppose pageviews are one of your GIANT details) about the Empire.
