Saying farewell to Caroline, the black glittery heart of the Empire

Summer of 2010, I got an email from a Canadian undergrad:

Hi Offbeat Bride,

First off: I love what you guys do. I have been reading for a couple of years now and it's very inspiring.

I don't want this to sound insulting, or preachy, or anything like that. I just want to give my feedback and constructive criticism for the site. Sometimes there are grammatical or spelling errors in the posts. They're rarely problematic to the actual article, but they are distracting and less-than professional.

I'm an English major in my last year of University and I aspire to one day be an editor. If, and I know this is a long shot, you wanted me to look over articles before you posted them, I'd love to volunteer. It would be great experience for me.

Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.

Caroline Diezyn

I wrote her back and took her up on her offer, first as a volunteer, and then as a paid contractor. Five years later, Caroline has done everything from copyediting to social media marketing to Tumblr strategy. She's been a contributing editor of Offbeat Home & Life and the Community Manager of the Offbeat Bride Tribe. This winter, she womanned the Offbeat Bride booth at three Lovesick Expos. Through it all, she was the grammar queen of the Offbeat Empire, the owner and enforcer of our internal style guide, our in-house white hat jerk, and resident consultant on all things dark and kinky. Really… she's the black glittery heart of the Offbeat Empire.

Today is Caroline's last day working with the Empire. In the five years that she's been working for me, she's gotten first her undergrad, then her Master's Degree, and is now a year into her PhD. She's shifting gears to focus more on school, which is awesome and amazing and we will all miss her so very much.

Chris Wolfgang, an editor who's worked on Offbeat Bride for the last year, will be taking over Caroline's copyediting duties, and the rest of us will all be decoupaging as much black glitter as possible onto our gently broken hearts. We'll miss you, Caroline!

  1. I do not know if this is me being dense, or a joke because this is about editing — but if she emailed you in the summer of 2015 … Doesn't that mean she's been around for a week or so?

    • God, it's like a cruel joke but it's actually just a legit typo. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DON'T HAVE A COPYEDITOR. Fixed. 🙂

      • I am so very relieved. My eyes kept flickering to the corner of my screen .. "It IS 2015, right? Right?"

I long for the day when someone thanks me for my black glittery heart.

        Fare thee well, editor!

  2. I would weep more if I hadn't already stalked Caroline onto EVERY SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM I'M ON, which, I would like to commend past-me on fortifying myself for this day by doing

  3. Aww, Caroline! I've loved our brief chats via email when I use the 'fix typo' button. The fact that I don't have to use it very often yet find myself crying out for it on other websites shows what a good job you've been doing!

    • Yes! I never realized how poorly some websites (even those major national broadcasting sites, not gonna name any names here) were written until you guys rolled out the "fix typo" button and I could finally do something about the errors. Caroline, you will be missed. Best of luck and enjoy your studies!

  4. Aw man, I am all teary-eyed! Thanks so much to you all, especially Ariel, for taking a chance on me and teaching me so, so, so much. I can't imagine not being part of this amazing family of blogs so I will definitely still be around, commenting and submitting posts. So much love to all of you!!!

  5. Caroline is a force of nature. I will miss her like I'm a missing a piece of myself and will always be grateful for the things I have learned from her. And boy, is that a lot of stuff. Thanks for all you do, Caroline, and for all you'll do in the future!

  6. Aw, Caroline! It has been so rad working with you! I will miss seeing you in our super not-so-secret Offbeat Empire work domain, but super stoked we are social media buds. And with that….

  7. Already missing the strongest makeup-game in the Offbeat Empire. Thinking about following you officially on Tumblr, Caroline, but I don't know that the world is ready to associate my Tumblr with, you know, me. MISS YOUR FACE.

  8. Aww Caroline. I'm going to miss you. But not too much, since I'll still be insta-stalking you and all of your beautiful photos. Best of luck in your future adventures!

  11. I'll miss you here, Caroline, but I'll at least be seeing you on Insta. Best of luck on your Phd. Here are seven black hearts and seven purple hearts for you! (At least I hope so; I'm an emoji noob.)

  12. Wow, thank you all so much for the kind words! I'm truly truly touched. I'm feeling the love through the Internet cables and I'm so glad we can all stay connected through 'em, too. <3
